No Juice from Amazon

Can you believe it?
Amazon will not publish mynew naughty story... because it's naughty.

Hello,

We're contacting you regarding the following title:

The Juice, by Vincent, Tamara (AUTHOR)
We’ve confirmed that your book(s) contains content that is in violation of our content guidelines and we will not be offering this title for sale on Amazon. As stated in our guidelines, we reserve the right to determine what we consider to be appropriate, which includes cover images and content within the book.
If you wish to re-publish your book(s) with content that meets our guidelines, it will need to be submitted as an entirely new book and go through our standard review process.

Then there's a link.
Follow the link and you get...

We don't accept pornography or offensive depictions of graphic sexual acts.

Well, really?
I wonder where I bougth all those porn ebooks I read in the last year, then...
(yes, I sometimes buy erotica, and also downright porn)

Anyway there's no way of telling what's deemed "offensive".
What the fuck, I've published ebooks about possessed nuns haveing lesbian threesomes and being shafted by demons, and nobody said anything.
Sex toys? Quite a few.
Alcohol and cigarettes? A stub-strewn ocean.
Drugs? A ton... and normally depicted as quite fun, to make thing worse.
Incest? Remember, it's not that bad if you can't get pregnant...
Corruption? That's my game...

But apparently "The Juice" got Jeff Bezos' knickers in a twist.
Oh, I will not throw the story away, of course. and had they just pointed out to me the passages that offended their reviewers, I would just have changed them. Who cares, I'm good: I can please myreaders while staying within requested parameters.
But this way?
You wrote 35000 words and some of them are offensive. Change them if you will.
Fuck you, Amazon.

But now I am really worried about my next story.
Will it be killed before seeing the light of day, too?

On the other hand, I have this very twisted idea, of trying and writing the most obscene story possible, while leaving all the hands-on action off-screen.
The roughest, most outrageous fuckfest ever imagined, and th ereaders will only get the after-effects...
It would be fun.

But right now, I feel like smashing my PC with a hammer.

  1. With the amount of ebooks flooding Amazon these days, their review process is likely to be done semi-automatically: if an in-house AI flags your book as explicit, then they consider it explicit. It's likely they themselves don't know what offended their system, so you shouldn't expect much.

P.S. Don't smash your PC with a hammer, publish on Smashwords instead. Have Amazon be your second choice etc.

  4. Maybe it was your book cover? I mean some of the most twisted ebooks you find on Amazon have very minimalistic none explicit covers. I would love it if you stayed on Amazon for e-publishing, I personally find Smashwords user unfriendly. But if that’s what you have to do to digitally publish, I guess there’s no other choice sadly.

I understand your frustration, but like another comment said the system is automated and not that clever. It’s not a person reviewing your book. I’m not sure what the AI looks for so that you can trick it. AIs are OK at image recognition and literal language, but not with subtext and nuance. So that might be a good starting point.
