I’ve been asked about the name-change and the first-name thing for my characters.
More or less all the characters in my stories change name. This is because all the characters in my stories go through a transformation of some sort, and emerge as something new and different. It’s sort of connected with the magical power of names, I think, and it has a symbolic meaning. Also, my characters usually change their name from a common, “quiet” one, to something more exciting.
So, new life, new looks, new name.
As for my characters starting calling their mothers by their first name, and then having sex with them…
Eugene pointed out that it’s a way of distancing themselves before the action, but I have never thought about that possibility. Or maybe I thought about it, but in a different way.
First, I base this on my own personal story: my relationship with my mother changed a lot, and for the better, after I started calling her by her name and not “mum” or “mother”. It had for me a symbolic meaning, basically, that we were no longer an adult and a little girl, but two adults.
It also marked a shift in our relationship, as we started being friends.
And before you ask, no, we never had sex (you naughty people!). We got stoned together, and we are in general pretty touchy-feely, but we never had sex.
But we discovered we had a lot more in common than we thought, and we started talking of things mothers and daughters don’t discuss (I think) and we grew a lot closer.
So I guess my protagonists start calling their mothers by their first name because the mother/daughter relationship is shifting, and they are in the process of becoming just two adult women, on the same level. Then OK, they end up having sex, because my characters are usually at least bi, and randy as rabid monkeys, and anyway come on, if you can’t get pregnant is not really incest, right?
And I found interesting the idea of doing this to circumvent the Amazon censorship filters.
I actually do include always a reference to the age of the daughter because Amazon is absolutely a no sex with minors sort of place, but it looks to me that incest, among consenting adults, does not bother them very much.
But really, who knows what Amazon really wants?
Here, I hope this answers some questions. I like talking about my writing, and I am always happy to discuss my process, or at least that part of my process I am aware of.
And now I’ll think about new ways to handle certain relationships in my stories. It’s always good to experiment.
So, thank you guys, and thank you Eugene.
Thank you for an elaborate answer!
ReplyDeleteP.S. It occurred to me that one of the reasons you can't post replies could be browser bugs. I don't know if you tried posting comments from different browsers, so if you didn't it might be a good idea to try and see. I personally had an issue with one of Amazon's services where Firefox refused to render a certain page properly and I had to use Edge to access the services on that page.
I always enjoy stories in which an alteration in a character's identity is shown by a change in their name. Naturally I thoroughly enjoyed it in your 'Raven'. Sometimes in my stories it is because they are now owned or have become some different kind of being, typically an alien or demoness. However, even in stories in which the woman is changed less, e.g. to being a biker or a gipsy, I find that acceptance of their new name a real nice point of the story. It also helps when the character is battling between who she is going to be allowing me to speak about the two sets of characteristics without confusion.
ReplyDeleteLove your Mother Daughter themes. Would love to see a Part 2, and "next adventure" of "The Widow"; M&D in their business suits/LBD. Please :-)
